Milestone Projects!

Milestone Project 1: Castle

For the first milestone project, it was lot of me just trying to figure out the Rhino program because I had never worked with it before. Honestly, it felt frustrating trying to figure out the tools and how they work within the program. I think I was trying to work it like Blender, which helped in some aspects. But it did not help in others, they do both work differently.

I did have trouble with orientation and perspective, moving around on the field needed some getting used to for sure.

I think once I figured out that the program basically runs on commands you give (and how it shows you these on the top bar), things made a lot more sense and wrapping my head around making the castle felt more free. I know for the castle, I wanted to make it simple but still have interesting aspects to it, I enjoy the feel of making the tiny structures, and personalizing them. My main idea was to make the castle cartoonish by minimizing features and keeping some parts simple.

Sadly, I'm not able to get any HD renders as the original file was lost on my laptop. So I used the 3d printed version of my model for the pictures. I feel pretty proud about my first creation, it fuels the part of me that wants to take these lessons that I'm learning in Object Design and make my own cartoon characters that I can print out.

More details on my model can be seen in my pics.

Milestone Project 2: Barcode

In my second project, I also had to redo it. I had lost my data so I had to start from scratch. It wasn't too hard to make the design because I had the idea in mind, I was just wondering how I would be able to push my idea without compromising the actual design.

There wasn't really any struggles for my project, just keeping the idea fresh really and a lot of the layer settings were really tricky. The layering here, especially assigning each square and white space to each layer took a minute to wrap my head around, such as which5 layer is first and such.

I did learn a lot though, especially in how you can use Rhino to create interesting designs. Even utilizing text to add something to the work was really interesting.

Mainly just the idea of the QR code and trying to mix it with the Pendleton designs. This project and project 4 felt the most freeing, I really enjoyed the creation of the surface design.

Milestone Project 3: Toy Helicopter

This was the most challenging project for me, I ran into a lot of personal hurdles that kind of made completing this project tricky. But over the semester I kept on it, and did a lot problem solving.

It really felt like making technical drawings the way I went about my helicopter, which made the set-up take a bit long, but there was so much numbers I needed to keep track of. The gears were easy but there was always some sort of complicated aspect to each part which made the time taken into this project take a while. It felt like this for each aspect of the heli.

Overall it probably took me over 35+ hours to get to where I'm at now, and I definitely learned a lot from doing this. I honestly feel after this I can make most objects now, just needs a lot of mind power for sure.

I should've chosen something simpler for sure and I did wish I was able to render this like how it is in reality but this is as far as I was able to reach.

Milestone Project 4: Happy Demon

In the last project, I really loved the whole concept. I really tried to go all out in my concepts especially in the sketches, but what I ended up with with was the Happy Demon idea. I think the hardest part of this work was actually making the 3d model. I had to think about how to go about the eyes and making them big enough for fingers and a big enough duster to hold in your hand.

There was a lot of working with the lines to get the smile right, the horns and the eyes spaced. I definitely re-did this work a few times to get the right smile and facial structure for the actual happy face and making it work into the duster.

There was a lot of model tweaking involved for sure, especially with the sizing. I was able to 3d print it and it was a smaller than I expected so I had to redo that model in Rhino until it worked in my hand. This last project I think really pushes me into this direction that I want to create cartoon characters now in Rhino, and 3d printing them out.

Overall: ME

This whole semester was pretty crazy for me, even feels like now I'm trying to catch up but despite all that, I definitely feel like have a the knowledge to work with these tools.

Rhino felt pretty scary and even frustrating at times but now I feel like it's a powerhouse of a program, just doing these projects gave me so much insight, even in 3d modelling in general. I do want to see what else I can do here. I have plans with working in Rhino still for sure. I even introduced it into my workplace and we're likely going to keep working with the program.
